Daily 5/ Literacy Rotations During our small groups we have been working on a variety of strategies to help us understand what we read. We have been working on summarizing using the “somebody wanted but so then” format. For this format, students think about the following questions:  Somebody: Who is the main character? Wanted: What is the main thing that they want? But: Think about obstacles, problems So: What does the character do in response to the problems? Then: How does it all end up? Connect it back to the problem and/or want.               For chapter books, this is useful to do after each chapter. We have also been continuing working on practicing schema, metacognition and will be introducing inferences in December and working on this through January.	Writing We will be wrapping up our personal narrative unit and moving into opinion writing.  We will continue to practice personal narratives using weekend news to support and solidify what we have been working hard on all year. Math We will be completing topic 3: add within 100 using strategies and moving into topic 4: Fluently add within 100. For these 2 units, we have been focusing on utilizing many different strategies to help us solve problems including break apart, open number line, compensation and stacking. Science/Social Studies Throughout December, we will be exploring how people celebrate holidays around the world.
In second grade, we ask that you are reading aa minimum of 15 minutes each night to help build fluency and practice reading skills. Please try to have your student log into iReady for at least 10 minutes per day. These lessons should be done independently. Please be on the look out in December for an email letting you know when NOT to log in due to testing. You can practice spelling the trick words as well as spelling words and the vocabulary words you can practice using them in sentences, defining, drawing pictures to match them, and identifying synonyms and antonyms.
