Daily 5/ Literacy Rotations
We have been working hard on our reading goals and becoming better readers. We will be starting with thinking strategies to think deeper about what we read. We will also be learning to summarize and write summaries that include all of the important details. To help with this at home, I have included one of the strategies we use below. After reading with your student help them craft a verbal summary about a chapter they have read or a small book they enjoyed. We also are creating “reading salad” this is where we question and think about the book as we read. There is a good balance between thinking and reading when we are real reading. The salad comes in when we are in class, each time we read the text we add a green paper to our bowl (lettuce) and each time we stop to think we add a red paper to the bowl (tomatoes). This is a fun, hands on way to encourage thinking while reading.

Writing
We have been working hard on personal narratives. We are going to craft one more personal narrative before we complete one from start to finish on our own. We will begin the process this month of learning how to self edit using a checklist. This checklist is created from the second grade rubric and will help with making sure all of the elements are included in our writing.

Math
We will be beginning topic 2: working with equal groups. We will be learning how to use arrays to find sums. We will also be identifying even and odd numbers and showing whether or not they can be divided into equal parts.

Science/Social Studies
We are currently in the middle of our earth changes science unit. We will be conducting many science experiments to show how earth can change quickly as well as over time. We have been exploring volcanos, earth quakes, erosion, and other forces of nature. Thank you for all of the support with donating the materials have needed for this unit!

In second grade, we ask that you are reading aa minimum of 15 minutes each night to help build fluency and practice reading skills.

Please try to have your student log into iReady for at least 10 minutes per day. These lessons should be done independently. Please be on the look out in December for an email letting you know when NOT to log in due to testing. Click the link below to access iReady

Spelling words are sent out weekly along with trick words and vocabulary words. You can practice spelling the trick words as well as spelling words and the vocabulary words you can practice using them in sentences, defining, drawing pictures to match them, and identifying synonyms and antonyms.
