Daily 5/ Literacy Rotations
We have been working hard on our reading goals! In our individual groups we have been working on different comprehension strategies and have reorganized our groups based on those strategies.

We have started talking about making inferences. We started out inferring using pictures and now we are moving on into making inferences about how characters feel. We will continue to work on this comprehension strategy through January and into February. The way we are thinking about making inferences is text clues + schema = inference (thinking about what the author is saying without writing it in the text)

In February we will move into working on determining importance.

Writing
In writing we have been working on creating opinion pieces. We have been learning what makes a good introduction or hook, how to support our opinion with reasons and how to conclude our writing by restating our opinion. We will continue to work on opinion writing throughout January. We will still be practicing personal narratives and working on our writing goals through weekend news and family letters.

Math
We wrapped up topic 13 on shapes and fractions. We will be working on subtraction next. This can be a tricky unit so please keep an eye out for extra work coming home to practice those harder lessons. We have also been working on being able to do our addition and subtraction facts quickly.

Science/Social Studies
Throughout  January and February, we will be exploring geography, citizenship, and the impact of important people in history.

In second grade, we ask that you are reading a minimum of 15 minutes each night to help build fluency and practice reading skills.

Please try to have your student log into iReady for at least 10 minutes per day. These lessons should be done independently.

Spelling words are sent out weekly along with trick words and vocabulary words. You can practice spelling the trick words as well as spelling words and the vocabulary words you can practice using them in sentences, defining, drawing pictures to match them, and identifying synonyms and antonyms.
