Daily 5/ Literacy Rotations
Our literacy groups are in full swing! So far we have been practicing our reading in groups that have similar reading levels. When we come back from fall break we will be focusing in on different skills we need such as comprehension, fluency, accuracy, and vocabulary.  It is also during this time that students are able to practice their spelling words as well as practice reading out loud to each other. We have set our individual reading goals and are practicing them during our independent reading time.

Writing
We have completed our first personal narrative! We also wrote an opinion piece about if animals should be in the zoo as well as an informative writing about scarecrows. We also completed a writing piece about what we would do if we ran the world. Our class has been working very hard on making sure we have great handwriting, proper spacing, and correct punctuations. After fall break we will be working on writing 2 more personal narratives before we complete a graded piece!

Math
We have been working hard on learning different strategies to add and subtract. Some of the strategies we have learned is thinking about doubles and near doubles, making 10 to add and subtract, counting on and back on a number line, and using ten frames. We will be moving into topic 2 which focuses on working with equal groups. Please see below for more information about this topic!

Science/Social Studies
Your child is about to begin a new journey as he or she explores changes that can occur to Earth’s landscape. These changes sculpt Earth’s landforms and can occur over many, many years, or they can occur quickly. Your child  will be exploring many phenomena while learning the following concepts: Earth events can occur quickly or slowly. Engineering solutions can be designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land. We will do many investigations in class over several weeks to help your child learn these concepts from firsthand experiences. Encourage your child to share these experiences with you and to teach you what he or she has learned. Ask your child to identify examples of what he or she is learning in everyday life. Thank you for your support as your child begins this new learning adventure.

In second grade we ask that you are reading a minimum of 15 minutes each night to help build fluency and practice reading skills.

Also, please try to  log into iReady for at least 10 minutes per day. These lessons should  be done independently. Please also be on the look out in December for an email letting you know when NOT to log in due to testing. Click the link below to access iReady
