Classroom News

Daily 5
We will be starting our reading groups and Daily 5 when we come back from the long Labor Day weekend! During our daily 5 rotations students will practice a variety of skills. The 5 centers that students rotate through each day are read to self, read to someone, listen to reading/ iReady lessons, and word work. It is also during this time that I will meet with students during guided reading groups. Your student will be a part of a group of other students that are identified to be at the same reading level or skill level. Some of the skills we will be working on during our guided reading groups are: how to decode an unknown word, building reading comprehension through oral and written retell, learning word meanings (vocabulary), breaking apart and building words, and discussing the author’s purpose through connections and lessons
learned from the story. These guided reading groups will be flexible and forever changing as your child’s reading needs and strengths change.

Writing:
We are using many of the thinking maps that we learned last year in first grade to construct 3 topic focused sentences that include proper conventions. We will be putting these skills to practice over the next few weeks as we learn how to write personal narratives with detailed sentences.

Math
We have been working hard on learning place value and different ways  to represent three  digit numbers. We have been practicing expanded form, word form, base ten  form  and  standard form. This  will  build a strong foundation to help us when we dive into learning different strategies that we can use to add and subtract numbers.

Science/Social Studies
Soon we will begin our Social Studies Unit exploring the past and its effect on the present. Within   this we will be comparing/contrasting rural, suburban, and urban communities.

In second grade we ask that you are reading a minimum of 15 minutes each night to help build fluency and practice reading skills.

Each Friday a family letter comes home. Please write back to your student on the back. I collect these to bind in a book at the end of the year as a keep sake for your child.

I will send home  spelling/vocabulary and trick words each week via email in a weekly update. These words consist of the following:
Spelling Words: sight words that we can read but also need to learn how to spell correctly in our writing.
Vocabulary Words: Words that we are working on defining and using in sentences to expand  our vocabulary.
Trick Words: Words that do not follow normal spelling rules that we are learning how to spell.
